Russians rush to download VPNs as the Kremlin Blocks Access to Facebook

  • Russian recently moved to control the flow of information in the country by blocking access to Facebook and activating a law that seeks to punish Russians with up to 15 years jail term for spreading false information about its military.
  • This move by Russia came shortly after a series of its media outlets found themselves being fact-checked by social media companies.
  • Facebook is however determined in their fight against false information revolving around the war in Ukraine and has promised to do everything possible to keep Russians protected from inaccurate facts.

On Friday, March 4, Russian media regulators said that it will cut off access to the social media site, Facebook in the country as it seeks to intensify its military attack on Ukraine.

A Russian media source said Facebook has flouted federal law by denying access to accounts of several state-controlled media organisations.

Russia fights back against social media sites

Last week, Russia placed partial restrictions on Facebook for flouting its laws.

According to the regulator on Friday, March 4, 2022, Facebook is highly biased against Russia.
