Department of Higher Education and Training

The Department of Higher Education and Training in collaboration with France Embassy is open for interested candidates who wish to apply for the South Africa Scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year in France.

The training will award tuition fees, airfare, visa charges, etc to potential applicants from Lesotho and Malawi who want to undertake their higher education, namely, master’s or Ph.D. study at a French university or college.

The Department of Higher Education and Training is one of the departments of the South African government, created in 2009, and supervises universities and other post-secondary education in South Africa with the mission of developing capable, well-educated, and skilled citizens who are able to compete in a sustainable, diversified and knowledge-intensive international economy, which meets the development goals of the country. Also works with various other governments and institutions to promote and support the offering and uptake of international scholarships.

The selected candidates will be awarded the following benefits:

Emphasis on accessing student housing
Visa fee exemption and assistance offered by Campus France Paris
Annual tuition fees, not exceeding €5 000 per year
A round-trip airfare ticket
A monthly allowance towards living expenses (approximately 700 euros for Master’s students and 1400 euros for Ph.D. students)
Accommodation aid (approximately 150 euros/month) can be obtained from the French Government
Co-funding opportunities are strongly encouraged to strengthen the collaboration between South African and French institutions and the public and private sector

Department of Higher Education and Training’s Eligibility

Eligible Countries: South African, Basotho, or Malawian national students are eligible to apply.
Eligible Course or Subjects: Master of Ph.D. study programmes in any field of study, but preferably in Science, engineering, and technology fields and niche courses not available in South Africa offered in a French institute of higher education can be applied for.
Eligibility Criteria: Candidates are required to meet all the following/given criteria to be eligible:
The applicants must be born on or after 1st January 1992.
The applicants must be eligible for admission to the chosen Masters’s or Doctoral programme.
The applicants must have enrolled in a French Higher Education institution to pursue a Master’s degree or Ph.D.

Application Procedure

How to Apply for the Department of Higher Education and Training: Candidates are required to apply for admission to the French university or college they wish to join. Then, interested students can apply for the scholarship via its dedicated online application portal.
Supporting Documents: Candidates are expected to submit the following documents to the university:
A complete application form (online)
A certified copy of the passport
An up-to-date résumé that also states the candidate’s entire academic record
A cover letter explaining motivations and interests in the planned academic project
Copies of academic degree certificates (Bachelor’s or Master’s only).
University transcripts of the last two years of studies
Admission Requirements: The applicants must have relevant prior academic qualifications such as a bachelor’s degree for master’s study and a master’s degree for Ph.D. study. The students must also meet the entry and academic requirements of the university they plan to join.
Language Requirement: The students must meet the language requirements of the university they wish to apply for. TOEFL, IELTS, etc are commonly accepted tests across most universities.
